Red flags are the plain warning signs that someone isn't who they say they are. Watch for any of these behaviors, especially in the first two weeks of chatting:
- Saying "I love you" within days of matching.
- Asking for money - for travel, a sick relative, a broken tractor, a sudden vet bill, anything.
- Refusing to send casual pictures of their farm, their truck, or themselves holding today's newspaper.
- Vague personal details - no home state, no crop type, no story about how they started farming.
- Calling in a panic asking for help because they're stuck, stranded, or in trouble.
- Sending overly romantic or sexually explicit messages right out of the gate.
- Refusing to video chat - there's always an excuse, always a broken camera.
Plain rule: If a stranger online asks you for money before you've ever laid eyes on them through a camera, they are not your future spouse. Close the chat and report the profile.
How to Verify You're Talking to a Real Farmer
Verification is easier than folks think. Real farmers know their trade and can talk about it plainly. Scammers who claim to farm usually can't get past the second question. Here's how to check, in order:
- Ask about their operation. What crop? What breed? What's the acreage, and is it rented or owned? Real answers are specific. Vague answers are a flag.
- Ask a seasonal question. "When did you wrap up harvest this year?" or "How'd calving go?" - a working farmer will answer in two sentences without thinking.
- Request a casual farm photo. Not a glamor shot - a boots-in-the-mud, phone-held-at-arm's-length photo with today's weather behind them.
- Reverse-image the profile photos. Right-click, save, and drop the image into Google Images. If the same photo lives on ten other websites, you have your answer.

A ten-minute video call tells you three things
- Are they real? The face matches the photos, the background matches the farm they described.
- Do they sound like themselves? Typed charm vanishes when a scammer has to speak out loud.
- Is there a spark? You'll know in the first two minutes whether it's worth a drive.
Use the in-site video feature whenever you can. It keeps your phone number private until you're ready to share it, and it works on desktop or phone with a stable internet connection.
First-Date Safety in Rural Areas
Rural first dates are different from city first dates - you're often driving an hour or more, cell service can drop, and "the local spot" might close at eight. The scammer's playbook rarely changes. Knowing it is half the defense:
- Week 1: Gorgeous photos, deep attention, sudden intense connection.
- Week 2: Push to move off the platform to text or email, where moderators can't see.
- Week 3: A sob story - medical bill, broken-down equipment, customs fee, travel money to "come meet you."
- Week 4: The money request, urgent and small at first. Then bigger. Then they vanish.
If this pattern starts showing up in your chats, stop replying and hit the report button. Even if you're 80% sure it's real - 80% isn't good enough when your bank account or heart is on the line. Our moderation team would rather review a false alarm than miss a scam.
How to Report Concerns
Every profile page has a Report link near the top right. Use it any time something feels off - we don't require proof, just a quick note about what raised the flag. Reports go to a real human moderator, typically within a few hours during business hours and by the next morning overnight.
